I HAVE LIVED HERE MY ENTIRE LIFE.
I AM FIGHTING FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
Together
We can build a District 6 where every family has a seat at the table.
I'm Dr. Sonia Garcia. Daughter of Salvadoran immigrants.
Former federal employee. Scientist. Community advocate.
Ready to Lead.
And like many families in District 6, I've experienced what happens when decisions are made without us.

How I will lead differently
NEIGHBORHOOD MEETINGS
Meet Residents Where They Are
Hold regular meetings throughout District 6, including apartment communities, faith centers, and neighborhood gathering spaces, not just with Civic Associations and special interest groups.
LISTEN BEFORE VOTING
Community Input Before Major Decisions
Engage residents early and gather feedback before major votes, so community voices help shape decisions, not simply react to them and only for developers.
TRANSPARENCY
No Surprises. No Closed-Door Decisions.
Provide clear, accessible information about proposals, timelines, and impacts so residents understand what is happening and why.
OPEN COMMUNICATION
Stay Connected Year-Round
Share regular updates, respond to constituent concerns, and create multiple ways for residents to stay informed and engaged.
My Priorities for District 6
Data Centers & Public Health
As a scientist, I believe major development decisions must be guided by evidence. We have seen the impacts data centers can have on air quality, water resources, noise levels, and surrounding communities across the country. Residents' health is not a bargaining chip for revenue. Any proposed data center must meet strict environmental, public health, and community standards. If those standards cannot be met, the answer should be NO!
Transparency & Accountability
Restore the Office of the People's Counsel (OPC), strengthen community engagement, and ensure findings from the Office of Legislative Oversight (OLO) receive meaningful consideration before major votes.
Strong Schools & Safe Communities
Prioritize school capacity, support first responders, improve traffic safety, and invest in infrastructure that keeps neighborhoods safe and thriving.
Economic Development & Small Business
Montgomery County should be leading the region in innovation and job growth, not falling behind. Despite being home to one of the nation's leading life sciences hubs, we continue to lose businesses, jobs, and investment to neighboring jurisdictions. That is a failure of economic development leadership. As a cancer researcher, I understand the value of innovation and the opportunities our life sciences sector provides. But we cannot rely on a single industry alone. We need a diversified economy that supports small businesses, attracts employers across multiple sectors, streamlines permitting, and creates pathways to family-sustaining careers.
Affordability & Housing
Support responsible growth, protect naturally affordable housing, prevent displacement, and ensure affordability reflects what working families actually earn.
Health, Equity & Community Engagement
Expand language access, protect community health programs, and bring information and services directly into our neighborhoods instead of expecting residents to navigate government on their own.
Tax Fairness & Responsible Spending
As a scientist, I believe decisions should be guided by data and measurable outcomes. Montgomery County faces a growing structural deficit due to current leadership, placing us in a ~$300 million structural deficit. While families are already struggling with rising costs. We need responsible budgeting, transparent spending, and accountability for every taxpayer dollar.
Working Families & Seniors
Protect and fight for working families, support teachers and federal workers, and help seniors age in place in the communities they helped build.
Opportunity for Every Family
As the daughter of working-class immigrants, I know firsthand how difficult it can be to navigate government systems. I will work to make county government more accessible, expand language access, and ensure families receive the support and information they need to thrive.
My campaign is rooted in a simple principle: Working with residents, not against them.
